瓦楞纸箱的主要功能是保护内装物不受环境(物理的、化学的,机械的、气候的等)的损坏。原标准将瓦楞纸箱分成三类,也是三个等级。主要是按照出口、内销及内装物的贵重程度来划分。随着目前国内外贸易的发展趋势及经济的化趋势,原来的划分方法已经不够科学与合理。

新修订的瓦楞纸板标准拟将纸板划分为“优等品”和“合格品”,对于瓦楞纸箱来讲也不尽合适。如果划分等级应该按照其将遇到的流通环境条件的严酷程度划分。而且作为标准,应该对瓦楞纸箱提出一个限度的要求即可,但考虑到我国的现状及使用习惯,将其划分为两类。即:1类纸箱主要用于储运流通环境比较恶劣的情况;2类纸箱主要用于流通环境较好的情况。
